Re-Dating Human Fossils:  A False Young-Earth Accusation

As usual, young earth creation science organization Answers in Genesis shows a complete lack of understanding of old earth creationist theory.  Carl Wieland, AIG-Australia, tells the story of the recent re-dating of some human fossils, and claims it causes more problems for progressive creationists.1  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Wieland looks at the fact that these apparently modern humans were dated at 195,000 years, which is much older than even progressive creationism allows for them to be descended from Adam.  He uses this to argue that progressive creationism doesn’t have an answer for it.  These humans could not be descended from Adam.

I agree, they could not be descended from Adam.  To support his claim, he mentions how ancient humans were advanced, using tools, making superglue, sailing the oceans, etc.  Thus, these humans from 195,000 years ago must have been intelligent beings, descendants of Adam.

It is not a problem for non-spirit humans, that are pre-Adamic, to be using tools, making glue, sailing, or showing other signs of intelligence.  Intelligence is not a measure of whether or not a human has an eternal soul.  If it were, then we have many people alive today who would not qualify as “eternal” due to mental retardation and other reasons.

Having a human, which young earth creation science claims is “modern” in every respect, is no problem with old earth creationism… even as far back as 195,000 years ago.  God created many different hominid species prior to Adam and Eve.  We don’t know why He did it the way He did, nor does it matter.  Fortunately for us, the believer’s views on creation don’t have any impact upon their salvation.

At the root of this misperception by Mr. Wieland is their unfair label they keep trying to apply to progressive creationists…that they are evolutionists.  A modern human, 195,000 years ago, is apparently outside the evolutionary chain of events.  Modern humans should not be showing up this early in the evolutionary model.  In this article, they try to use evolutionary theory to argue against progressive creationism.  However, progressive creationists do not believe in evolution.

With progressive creationism, or theistic evolution for that matter, there is no problem with the issues that Wieland brings to light.  This merely means there were multiple species of hominids alive at the same time, over the last 200,000 years, just like there are multiple species of fish, monkeys, dogs, etc., like we have today.  We already knew there were multiple hominid species living at the same time, so even this revelation is nothing new.

While old earth creationists know that Wieland’s arguments are faulty, they will no doubt be accepted by young earth creationists as confirming their belief in a young earth.  Therefore the article by Wieland will accomplish its desired effect…to strengthen the faith of their followers…despite the fact that a young earth is a fallacy.
