Making Fun of Creationists

In a daily article for the Instutute for Creation Research website posted on 13 April 2010, science writer Brian Thomas laments that "Digs at Creation Science are a Mindless Waste of Time."1  He is referring to a parody website which poked fun at creationists, such as this one quoted by Thomas:

This is how much care God took in creating the Earth--He included an amazing diversity of fossils representing ancient humans and other creatures that never existed, just to keep us guessing. Oh, that wacky deity.2

As an old earth creationist and a Christian, we should not condone, nor participate in jokes aimed at young earth creationists.  However, I must point out that if you are a young earth creationist, you will be the target of more jokes by the secular world in the future, and you only have yourself to blame.  Let me take a few moments to explain.

Over the last two centuries, scientific discoveries have proven that the earth is billions of years old.  The only ones that claim otherwise are young earth creationists.  Unfortunately, YEC people are the most vocal critics of an old earth, and their organizations issue claim after claim criticizing the science that proves the earth is old.  Unfortunately, all of these claims are routinely and easily dismissed by examining the science behind the claims.  Critiques of young earth claims come from both within the church, from websites such as Answers In Creation, and from outside the church.

Even though the claims of YECs are so easily dismissed as poor science, YECs still doggedly stick to their beliefs.  Because of this, YECs will be the recipient of jokes from the secular world for as long as we have YECs in the church.  And since the secular world ties YEC belief to their understanding of the church as a whole, all of us in the church are seen by the secular world as clinging to fairy tales which cannot be true.   Thus, YECs are dragging the church down, ruining its credibility in a world which desparately needs the saving power of Jesus.  Thanks to young earth creationism, millions of people have rejected the church, and will never consider it in the future...unless the church makes a dramatic change now.

That change, of course, is abandoning the lost cause of young earth creationism, and adopting old earth creationism, which is supported by modern science.  If the church can show the world that you can be a Christian, and believe in the findings of modern science, then perhaps we can win back some of those millions that YEC has willingly left behind.   In concluding his article on the ICR website, the author states about the so-called jokers,

Such nonsense perfectly illustrates the apostle Paul's message to the Romans: "And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind."

As you can see, young earth creationist organizations are ready to abandon people.  However, I'm not ready to do that.  It is not up to me to judge someone as being too bad to be saved.  And, since the church itself, with the help of young earth creationism, caused this problem in the first place, it is up to the church to fix it.  The sooner we abandon young earth creationism, the better.

Can the church survive without young earth creationism?  You bet.  It reminds me of the battle we had over geocentricity in the 1600's.  Galileo caused quite a stir by supporting the idea that the planets revolved around the sun, which was contrary to the beliefs of the Church at the time.   Eventually, science won out, and today everyone believes the earth revolves around the sun.  The church changed its views based on scientific discoveries back then, so we can do the same thing today.  The church needs to change its views on young earth creationism.  If it doesn't, the jokes will keep on coming, and we only have ourselves to blame.

NOTE:  As a reviewer of young earth claims, I've noticed that many claims by YEC authors poke fun at old earth beliefs and believers, in an effort to energize YEC believers.  Young earth creationist organizations often use such 'emotional' efforts to stir up their followers.  I believe this is done because they cannot convince people with their weak scientific claims, so they appeal to the emotions instead.  Therefore YEC authors are guilty of the same thing they are complaining about in this article!  Such "digs," at people who believe in an old earth are a mindless waste of time.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.  Click here for more.

Did you know that you can be a Christian, and believe that the earth is billions of years old?  You can even believe in evolution and be a Christian.  There is no conflict between science and the Bible...all one needs is a proper understanding how to merge science and the Bible.  To learn more about old earth creationism, see Old Earth Belief, or check out the article Can You Be A Christian and Believe in an Old Earth?
