    This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in July 1996.  In answering this question, Morris addresses three types of fish thought to have possibly evolved into amphibians.  He mentions the problems with these three, and no rebuttal is necessary.

Update - April 2006

     At the time of Morris' writing this article, there were no good fossil fish candidates to show evolution to amphibians.  This does not indicate that this evolutionary process could not have happened...it merely means that the transitional fossils have not been identified. 

     In April 2006, a new fossil discovery appears to have bridged this gap between fish and amphibians.  Known as Tiktaalik Roseae, it lies in between fish and amphibians in the fossil record, some 20 million years prior to the first amphibians.  And it has features of both which appear to overcome the arguments that Morris presents against the fish that he lists.  While more study will have to be done, the preliminary report is very interesting.

     For the young earth creationist, however, this will not prove evolution.  They will then want to see the transitional fossil between this fossil and the amphibians.  No number of transitional fossils will satisfy the young earth creationist.  For more on this, read Transitional Fossils.
