How do Creation/Evolution Debates Affect People?

Review by Greg Neyman

This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in June 1991.  I agree with Morris that these debates can have a profound impact.  I rejoice when new Christians are brought into the family, whether by true science or the young earth pseudoscience.  I believe, however, that people would be better off in the long run by abandoning young earth creation science.

In these debates, young earth people who are trained in the inherent weaknesses of evolution always come off with the upper hand.  I would not expect anything less.  This does not mean that evolution is not true, it merely means that creationists know how to exploit the weaknesses of evolution.

Interestingly, Morris uses the term brainwashed, in referring to evolutionists.  This is exactly what happens to many young earth believers...they are indoctrinated and brainwashed into believing the false young earth science.  It does not need to be this way, since you can believe in old earth science, and the Bible.

As Morris says, the faith of Christian students is strengthened in these debates.  It would be better if they were being based in true science.  It is better to be strengthened in the truth than in a falsehood.

He mentions one professor who left the debate, claiming that this had been a creationist "set-up" (which most of them are).  For this reason, I am against debates.  It gives the young earth community a platform from which to present their views.  I think it would be better if we deny the young earth creationist this opportunity.  Why give them the opportunity to spread their false teachings.

The church cannot make much progress in the world until we rid it of young earth creationism.  If you recall the church's battle with geocentrism, and how the leaders at the time thought this would be the end of the church.  However, the church has survived just fine despite losing this battle.  The same can be true of the battle over young earth creationism.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.  Click here for more.

Are you a Christian who believes in young earth creationism?  Now that we have shown the many difficulties of the young earth creation science model in this and many other articles, how does this impact your Christian life?  If you are a young-earth creationism believer, click here.
