Certain: Six Creation Days?

14 April 2006

The 14 April 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments states that they are certain that creation was six, twenty-four hour days.

The Creation Moments author claims that there are other portions of Scripture that depend on the creation days being 24-hour days.  As proof, he gives Exodus chapter 20, with the same concept repeated in Deuteronomy 5:13.  However, this is giving the pattern for our work week.  The pattern is the same, whether it is six periods of long ages followed by a long age of rest, or six 24-hour days followed by a 24-hour day of rest.  It does not matter how long the days of creation are, we still have an example, and a pattern for our work week, if we accept long ages.

For more on this issue, see the commentary on Exodus 20.  In addition, the author mentions that the six creation days was followed by a normal seventh day.  This is contrary to the claims of Scripture, which specifically indicate that the seventh day is still ongoing.  For more, see Hebrews 4

The author goes on to say that if they were long ages, then our work would require us to work six long ages before taking the seventh off.  Again, it is the pattern, and not the length of time that is important.  The Ten Commandments is intact even if you accept long ages.  These long ages do not invalidate them.

The creation week, which took billions of years, was translated by God into a pattern that we could mirror for our work week.  You can believe in long ages, and still take Genesis and Exodus literally, without harming the intent or meaning of our work week.

The title of this article was Certain: Six Creation Days.  I agree with the author, there were six creation days.  However, they represented billions of years.  The meaning of Scripture, and the associated doctrines, are unaffected by a belief in billions of years.  You can still be a conservative Christian, believing in an inerrant Bible, and long ages.
