Olber's Paradox

10 February 2006

The 10 February 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments discusses Olber's Paradox.

The authors basically claim that this paradox is still unsolved.  However, there are numerous explanations for the resolution of the paradox.  Naturally, none of them are accepted by young earth creationists.  In astronomy, the explanations are accepted.  If you use such an argument for creation, you are risking looking like a fool.

Even common sense argues against this paradox.  Due to forces put in place by God (and recognized by secular astronomers), the stars are not equidistant from each other.  They are gathered in clusters called galaxies.  The distance between stars within galaxies is governed by the attraction between objects of mass (gravity).  Not all stars are of equal mass, leading to different spacing.  The theory that all stars should be evenly distributed throughout the universe is an old theory, which is only clung to by young earth creationists when they want to argue against the Big Bang.

As Christians we should thank God for the wonderful natural laws which govern our universe.   However, as is typical of Creation Moments claims, this is strictly a "God of the Gaps" type argument.  Presenting such an argument in defense of creation is a pointless exercise in futility...it will strengthen those who already believe, but will do nothing to argue for your position with the atheist or old earth creationist.
