Was Fruit Like This in Eden?

2 February 2006

The 2 February 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments discusses the perishable nature of fruit, specifically tomatoes.

The authors relate how the tomato rapidly over-ripens.  They then mention how scientists have found a natural way to slow this process, so that they last longer on the grocery shelves.  That's nice to know.

They use this to show how sin has affected this part of creation (fruit).  They wonder if fruit decayed in the Garden of Eden.  A good question.  Since the Garden was a special place, distinct from the rest of the world, fruit may have lasted indefinitely.  However, although we can wonder and speculate about it, we cannot be dogmatic...we simply don't have the evidence to support it either way.

As Christians we should thank God for the fruit that we enjoy in our diets.   However, as is typical of Creation Moments claims, this argument boils down to an emotional one, or a "God of the Gaps" type argument.  Presenting such an argument in defense of creation is a pointless exercise in futility...it will strengthen those who already believe, but will do nothing to argue for your position with the atheist or old earth creationist.
