Creation Moments

Inchworm Strategy

17 January 2006

The 17 January 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments discusses the inchworm.

The Creation Moments author tells how the inchworm (actually a caterpiller and not a true worm) looks like the twigs on which it walks.  When a predator comes up, it knows to freeze.  It is imitating the branch upon which it rests.  Hopefully, the predator will not notice it, and will not prey upon the inchworm.

At the end of the article, they say scientists claim the inchworm "just happens" (i.e. it evolved) its color pattern and freezing behavior.  Yes, that's correct.  Evolution has no problem explaining the inchworm.  Therefore the inchworm poses no threat against evolution.  The author goes on to state that "The almighty hand of God is evident even in the inchworm."

As a Christian, I agree, and give God praise for the creatures in his creation.  However, as is typical of Creation Moments claims, this is strictly an emotional "God of the Gaps" type argument.  Presenting such an argument in defense of creation is a pointless exercise in futility...it will strengthen those who already believe, but will do nothing to argue for your position with the atheist or old earth creationist.
