The Jellyfish with a Broad Reach

12 January 2006

The 12 January 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments discusses a species of jellyfish known as velella.  This particular jellyfish uses a sail to catch the wind and move around.  The sail is designed so that it can even maneuver with a headwind (at a 60 degree angle).

I agree that the velella is wonderfully designed, and we should praise God for such a unique creation.  However, there is nothing that would imply that this design could not have been the result of God's guiding hand upon evolution.  Thus, this is no argument against evolution.

This type of argument (it's a beautifully designed creature...God must have designed it) is known as a "God of the Gaps" type argument.  Presenting such an emotional argument in defense of creation is a pointless exercise in futility...it will strengthen those who already believe, but will do nothing to argue for your position with the atheist or old earth creationist.
