Heated Moths

2 January 2006

The 2 January 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments discusses the "warm-blooded" moths.

The author tells about moths that are able to generate enough body heat to survive in colder temperatures.  In reality, this is not warm-bloodedness.  Creation Moments says that they in the past have dealt with warm-blooded plants, reptiles, and bumblebees.  They stretch the definition of warm-bloodedness beyond the scientific definition.  A true warm-blooded organism maintains the same temperature.  The organisms that Creation Moments describes maintains a temperature at which the organism can still function relative to the ambient temperature.  Thus, their moth, bee, or whatever only has to be warmer than the temperature of the environment.

The moths in question apparently get their high amount of energy required from the sap exposed by the red squirrel (see the 3 Jan 06 Creation Moments rebuttal).  The authors go on to state "these warm-blooded moths teach us that the features we normally associate with more advanced creatures actually provide no evidence whatsoever for evolution."

They don't provide any evidence against evolution either.  Evolutionists have no problems explaining these relationships between the moths and the squirrel.

As Christians we should thank God for creating such diversity in the animal kingdom.  However, this claim is typical of Creation Moments claims.  It is strictly a "God of the Gaps" type emotional argument (this is wonderful...God must have done it).  Presenting such an argument in defense of creation is a pointless exercise in futility...it will strengthen those who already believe, but will do nothing to argue for your position with the atheist or old earth creationist.
